Home to all-weather flat and jump racing, Kempton is best known for its two-day Christmas Festival, which is a highlight of the festive racing period, featuring the King George VI Chase, the Christmas Hurdle, and the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase.
Flat Racing
Kempton switched to Polytrack from turf in 2006, and it is a popular venue for evening racing throughout the year.
The flat track at Kempton is a right-handed oval with two loops, approximately a mile round, with the outer circuit a mile-and-a-quarter.
Although generally a fair track, races run over 5 furlongs, 1 mile 1 furlong, and 1 mile 2 furlongs are run on the inner loop, meaning a low draw is advantageous, as is being ridden up with the pace - very few horses come from behind in races over those distances.
Jump Racing
The jump track at Kempton is well-known as being one of the fairest in the UK, with relatively easy fences.
Typically, many runners remain in contention into the final turn before getting strung out a little over the final fence - you need a horse that travels and jumps to get home at Kempton.
