Chinese Grand Prix Preview & Betting Tips (Sunday, 21st April)

Formula 1 returns to China and the Shanghai International Circuit this week, five years after its last visit. It could be an interesting weekend on track. Since the sport was last in town, teams have new cars and new tyres and changes to the track surface mean all historical data is probably worthless.

Saturday in Shanghai will host the first of this season’s six ‘’sprint’' races. These involve a practice session followed by a ‘’Sprint Shootout’', creating a starting grid for a Saturday 100-kilometre sprint race. Saturday continues with the traditional qualifying format in the afternoon. In short, there will be plenty of betting opportunities this weekend.

The 5.451km layout features 16 turns (nine right, seven left). It is predicted most teams will suffer from high tyre-wear, and will use the hardest compound rubber for the majority of the race and will instruct drivers to take two pitstops.

High tyre-wear is a result of a lot of cornering and entering slow corners at high speed. The Chinese circuit may have two very long straights, but it also has numerous slow and some very slow corners – which means lots of braking.

So, this is a very different track to Suzuka. And while we cannot see beyond the 2/9 favourite, Max Verstappen, there is good reason to believe he will not win so easily this time and Ferrari will show they are well clear of Mercedes, McLaren and Aston Martin.

Go low on winning margin

It was only two races ago that Max Verstappen’s brakes failed. And, while he usually loves to streak off into the distance, the Dutchman may nurse his car more than usual once he has the race in safekeeping. Twenty-two, 13, and 12 seconds have been his winning margins so far in 2024, but 10/3 on any race winner prevailing by under 5 seconds looks the value shout this weekend.

Ferrari look good for at least one podium

McLaren team boss Andrea Stella has already stated that the Chinese circuit’s configuration will not suit his cars this weekend. Given Shanghai International Circuit’s large number of low-speed corners, he has declared the race will be an exercise in “damage limitation” for his drivers.

With that rival seemingly out of the way, Ferrari looks good for at least one podium finish. Much depends on the performance of Red Bull’s number two, Sergio Perez, but 13/8 is available on both Ferrari drivers (Sainz and Leclerc) finishing in the top-3 (as they did in Australia) and this too smacks of value.

Williams to falter first

Our final selection is for a Williams car to be the first race retirement. Last time, in Japan, Williams’ Alex Albon never made it beyond the second corner. In the race, its second driver, Logan Sargeant, made an unforced error and narrowly missed the barriers.

A team that is short of parts and resources, there is no guessing how patched up either Williams car will be this weekend. All-in-all, there’s plenty to suggest 8/1 on either Albon or Sargeant being the first retirement looks value.
