Grand National Tips - Big Race Verdict of the Freebets Experts

Longhouse Poet (e.w.) (Nap) - 16/1 with BoyleSports (6 places)
Cloudy Glen (e.w.) (Longshot) - 50/1 with BoyleSports (6 places)

Only 10 horses have managed to win the Grand National during the last 50 years carrying more than 11st. Changes made to the course this century make it much harder for horses towards the top of the handicap to see out this marathon trip and with that in mind I think the likes of leading fancies Any Second Now, Noble Yeats, Delta Work and Galvin are all vulnerable to more lightly weighted rivals.

My two horses against the field are Longhouse Poet, one of the many Irish-trained contenders and rank outsider Cloudy Glen, who is available to back at odds of 100/1 as I write. Ante-post favourite Corach Rambler is easily the best handicapped horse in the race and would be the one to beat if able to keep within hailing distance of the leaders. Strong stayers Galliard Du Mesnil and Fortescue are another couple who are capable of making the frame.

Longhouse Poet (e.w.) (Nap) - 16/1 with BoyleSports (6 places)

Trained by Martin Brassil, responsible for 2006 winner Numbersixvalverde, the sixth horse home 12 months ago has clearly been trained with one race in mind all season and the nine-year-old son of Yeats goes into the race following a perfect preparation.

Longhouse Poet, after travelling strongly, came through to dispute the lead jumping the second-last fence 12 months ago, only for the gelding to weaken in the closing stages. It appeared that the horse’s stamina gave out over the marathon trip. But the selection had previously shown plenty of stamina in winning the Thyestes Chase on soft ground, and on his most recent start won over 3m 2f at Down Royal last month. It was probably more due to the horse failing to settle in the early stages of the race.

I expect jockey J J Slevin to delay his challenge a little longer on this occasion and with the ground expected to ride a little livelier the selection makes plenty of appeal granted some luck in running.

Cloudy Glen (e.w.) (Longshot) - 50/1 with BoyleSports (6 places)

The case for Venetia Williams’ charge is less obvious than that of Longhouse Poet after being pulled up in the Ultima at the Cheltenham Festival last time. However, the son of Cloudings had previously finished an eyecatching third on his reappearance in Haydock’s Grand National Trial, the horse’s first start for over a year, and has claims on several pieces of form.

Cloudy Glen has many qualities associated with a Grand National winner; plenty of early pace, unlimited stamina and a handy weight of only 10st 4lb. If the each-way selection was to reproduce his Ladbroke Trophy victory of just over 16 months ago, the big-priced outsider is certainly no forlorn hope.

Charlie McCann - Freebets Tipster

I recommended Le Milos when the weights were announced in Liverpool mid-February, and we have the value at 33/1 but I was underwhelmed with his finishing effort at Kelso last time and I can see his stamina give way as they cross the Melling Road for a second time.

Mr Incredible has long been on the shortlist, but he has planted himself at the start in the past and at a bigger price I do believe Vanillier is particularly well treated on his hurdles form. The grey has not looked a natural over fences, but his jumping was much improved at Fairyhouse last time and he must go close with a clear round.

In the end the in has come down on CORACH RAMBLER who would be carrying 10lbs more if the handicapper could reassess the Ultima Chase winner at Cheltenham last month. The selection finished behind Le Milos in the Coral Cup at Newbury in the autumn, but he was finishing best of all and if he is within hailing distance of the leaders going to two out then I do think he will be very hard to beat.

Lucinda Russell and Peter Scudamore have already saddled a National winner courtesy of One For Arthur back in 2017 the last British trained winner of the great race. He will need luck in running given he is often outpaced/held up out the back, but the hope is that Derek Fox, if he passes the doctor, can weave a passage through the field.

The wonderful top-weight Any Second Now and last years winner Noble Yeats will have their supporters as will Delta Work who will appreciate every drop of rain that falls on the track on Friday. The latter is considered the chief threat, but it is Another For Scotland and Corach Rambler for National glory.

Recommendation: Corach Rambler EW at 10/1 with BoyleSports (6 places)

Ed Quigley - Freebets Tipster

The 2023 Grand National looks a tough one to solve, and I’ve gone with three runners against the field.

The Gordon Elliott trained Galvin, Le Milos from the Dan Skelton yard and The Big Breakaway, trained by Joe Tizzard, are my three against the field.

Tom Bellamy - National Hunt Jockey & Brand Ambassador

I think that Delta Work is the classiest horse in the race, and considering that, I think he’s got a decent weight at 11.4 I thought. He maybe looked like he didn’t stay last year, I’m not sure, but despite that, he’s still the class horse in the race.

The other I like is Mr Incredible, if you’re feeling lucky, he’s got the form to win this race, but a note of caution because he is a very quirky customer. If he’s in the mood, if he gets a good trip round then I think he’s got the form to go very well off the weight he’s got.
